A Fresher Dining Room And More Changes To Come

Hi~
Well, it is a "rainy" day here in So Cal. I have my rain boots on, my umbrella ready to go and I was really hoping that we would get a good soaking so I would not have to turn on my sprinklers for a few days. Mmm.... the big storm, not so big:(   Just enough to dirty the car and make the roads slick with oil for all the fantastic So Cal rainy day drivers:)) If you live here, you know what I mean.
Tomorrow will be back in the 70's with no rain in the future (at least not in the next week).Back to short sleeves and flip flops. Oh well, it could be worse.
After the New Year , like many of you, I started to purge the house. One room I focused on was my dining room. I just had too much going on so I decided to SIMPLIFY.
This may seem like I still have a lot of things on the buffet, but I actually got rid of some things and replaced them with my French canning jars that I got from Dreamy Whites.  I love them there. They used to be on my dining room table, but I think this spot is so much better.
Heres a larger view of the area. That big transferware platter is one of my favorite pieces. I got it for such a steal because it has a slight crack running through it. What the seller saw as damaged, I saw as perfection.
I think I am going to paint the mirror white. Any thoughts? Advice please.......
This is one of the sconces that flank each side of the mirror. These are a work in progress. I am either going to paint them or change them out. I think they may be too big for the space. I have been looking  for some, but haven't been wooed by anything yet . What do you think?? Yes, I am taking advice today.
Here's the closeup. They are pretty, right???? Oh, the dilemma.
The dining room table is simple. I have used a grain sack as my runner, set out some French transferware plates and scattered some candles around. I love the look . I added the mirror to the center. There is such a nice reflection when the candles and the chandelier are lit.
One thing that I absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE is the look of a candle that has drippy wax all over it. I know that it can be messy so I put a plate (usually a vintage saucer) underneath so it doesn't drip all over the table. I love the romantic feel it has.
This is a little corner of my dining room. I have had this piece of furniture forever. Isn't it sweet??? The inside is filled with vintage teacups and saucers.
Have I mentioned before that I love anything with blueberries?? Well, I do. This is a blueberry topiary and I love it. It originally was in a terra cotta looking pot, so I removed that and put it in this iron urn. Much better look.
The one big eyesore in my dining room is my china cabinet. I actually love the cabinet, but can't stand the wood. I have been meaning to do something about it forever, but have put it off so many times. I bought this cabinet about 15 years ago at a thrift store for $250.00. It is such great condition and provides excellent storage as well display space.
Here it is. I think it will look great painted, but it is a big job and I want to do it right.
I think the bones of this piece are so great and I love all the glass. I hope sooner than later I am able to blog about the big "REDO" Wish me luck, it may take awhile.
This is my dining room chandelier. This was my Grandma Marys and I was given this after she passed away. I painted it white and added the crystal bulb covers.

Storm update~~~~Still no rain and even some dry spots the ground:((

I have added Linky Followers onto my blog. I keep hearing that Google Friend Connect will be shutting down. So better to be safe than sorry, I added it. Please join up if you would like.

Enjoy the rest of the week

  1. I like your changes and think the dark china cabinet would be nice painted a lighter color too! Your grandmother's chandelier is beautiful too, never seen crystal bulb covers before! Thanks for sharing!

  2. Love it all Cheryl, it looks so beautiful!!
What a wonderful gift to remember your grandmother by, it is just gorgeous!
Hope you have a great day. We've only had a few sprinkles in the a.m, but nothing more, I was hoping for a little more rain.
And I know what you mean about the crazy drivers!
    Sincerely,
    Melinda

  3. This room looks very pretty. Have you thought of painting the mirror silver, it would look fantastic with all of the crystal and the blue walls.

I am disgusted with this pitiful rain, maybe it we will get more this evening ~ we so need it.

  4. Hi Cheryl, I actually like your mirror as it is. It looks great with the sconces as they are as well. The sconces add a variety of texture to your display. I think everything on your buffet and surrounding it on the walls is perfect. Just my opinion. :-)

  7. Hi Cheryl,

I loved what you've done so far! The mirror looks great the way it is, but if you're like me and often crave change, then I'd say to paint it white if that's what you really want. :) My entire house is a work in progress, so I totally understand where you are coming from when you say you want to change up your dining room. Love the pretty canning jars from Dreamy Whites too! And I laughed when you mentioned how crazy the drivers get here in LA whenever it rains for just a little bit...they act like they've never seen rain their life! lol

Anyway, hope you are enjoying the rain while it lasts. :)

    Hugs,
    Jessie

  9. Your table looks so pretty! I see you have a bistro chair? I love those! I am always on the lookout for them. I love how the mirror looks now, is it gray? The buffet would be a huge job but so worth it in the end. I am trying to paint all of my wooden items, too. Our master bedroom is the last to go. Overwhelming sometimes! I love the French canning jars, they add a great pop of color.

I am following your new linky tool now, too!

  20. Your home is just beautiful Cheryl! Blue and white is my very favorite color combo. I especially love your sconces, and I don't think they are too big for the area at all. Oh, and the little cabinet in your dining room is so pretty, I've never seen one quite like it. I'm in the mood to lighten up, too!

  23. Your room is so pretty! I love the way the mirror looks now, is it a silvery color? I kind of like the contrast. Even though the china cabinet would be a big job, I'd probably paint that though. I'm in the middle of giving my dining room a makeover right now...I wish it would all just come together :)

  27. I feel like we have the same dilemma. My walls in my dining room are almost exactly the same shade as yours... and my china cabinet has the same wood tones as yours, too. My cabinet belonged to my grandma. She upgraded to that cabinet in the seventies. I would love to refinish it with some paint, but my mother would KILL me. The threat of her scorn compells me to forgoe this move. Alas, my cabinet shall continue to sit with her wood tone. I will have to come up with alternative methods of helping her blend in more. I LOVE the etched mirror on your table, though! Exquisite! andrea@townandprairie
